Israel Extends Truce for Two More Days
Israel and Hamas have extended their ceasefire for two days, just as it was about to expire on Monday. Hamas will continue to return hostages while the truce holds.
Eleven Israeli women and children were freed by their Hamas kidnappers on Monday in the fourth swap under the original four-day truce. Israel said it would extend the ceasefire by one day for every 10 additional hostages released.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the ceasefire won’t end Israel’s war with Hamas, but neither Israeli nor U.S. officials have been clear about what that would mean.
Fired College Coaches Owed $118 Million
Fired college football coaches are set to earn more than $118 million in buyout packages in 2023, a new record driven largely by the $75 million that Texas A&M owes fired coach Jimbo Fisher.
The total rises to $530 million when including the past decade. This list of top 10 coaches’ buyouts shows the amounts that can be involved.
Most top college coaches have buyout clauses for early dismissal. For example, Ohio State coach Ryan Day, potentially on the firing line over three straight losses to Michigan, would be owed $46 million if he’s fired.
College athletes are also getting paid these days (though not quite as much, and without the huge buyouts) with new Name, Image and Likeness programs. If you’d like to learn more about the athletes’ compensation, sign up for NIL Wire with one click.
World Population Tops 8 Billion
If everything feels more crowded, that’s because it is. The world’s population has passed the 8 billion mark, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Humanity’s numbers grew from 6 billion to 8 billion since the turn of the century, after having doubled from 3 billion to 6 billion from 1960 to 2000. But the rate is slowing now as people live longer and have fewer babies.
A new interactive map (see it here) imagines the world as 1,000 people and divides them proportionally by region. The total U.S population is represented by 42 people, while China and India together have 355.
