Twitter Rival Launches With 30 Million Signups
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s Threads, a new rival to Twitter, launched Wednesday and passed 30 million signups overnight, mainly because Threads is tied to sister platform Instagram. Everyone who signs up brings their Instagram followers with them.
Twitter responded by threatening to sue Meta for poaching former Twitter employees to create a “copycat” application.
Threads is already the biggest competitor Twitter has seen. Analysts have pointed out one downside: To delete your Threads account, you also have to delete your entire Instagram account.
| No Answers on White House Cocaine
The mystery of who left cocaine at the White House deepened Thursday, with the Secret Service saying the baggie was discovered at a West Wing entrance, not in a lobby area as previously reported.
Biden administration officials fended off all questions, with one staffer drawing derision for claiming discussion was banned by the Hatch Act, which prohibits government officials from conducting certain kinds of political business.
The Secret Service is still awaiting results from forensic tests and reviewing visitor logs and security camera records. They expect to conclude the investigation by next week. | Conservatives Push Little Film to Big Success
“Sound of Freedom,” an independent film produced for $14 million, shocked Hollywood by beating the $290 million “Indiana Jones” sequel at the box office on July 4, partly due to a push by conservative groups.
The independent movie is a faith-based action thriller about a federal agent who breaks up a child-trafficking ring. Both it and “Indiana Jones” earned close to $12 million at the box office, but “Freedom” also made at least another $2 million from a crowd-sourced ticketing platform.
Disney, which produced “Indiana Jones,” had rights to “Sound of Freedom” but refused to release it. Eventually, they let it go to Angel Studios, the current distributor.
