Good morning! Today in 1908, the greatest asteroid impact in recorded history struck Siberia with the equivalent of a 12-megaton explosion. Known as the “Tunguska Event,” it flattened 80 million trees over 830 square miles. And that’s why we observe “Asteroid Day” every year on June 30.
In today’s edition, we’re discussing the Supreme Court ruling that ends affirmative action, a new Japanese app that shows if your cat’s in distress, and the opening of the world’s largest gas station, featuring 120 pumps and over 350 employees.

Supreme Court Ends Affirmative Action
The Supreme Court ended affirmative action for colleges Thursday, ruling that admissions policies at Harvard and the University of North Carolina violated the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause by favoring students according to their race.
The 6-3 vote followed party lines, with the six conservative justices joining the majority opinion. It was a victory for conservative legal strategist Edward Blum, who challenged the two schools’ admission policies nearly a decade ago.
Harvard and UNC, along with many other universities, said they would abide by the decision while seeking other criteria allowing them to continue enrolling the mix of students they prefer. | Deadly Heat Wave Blankets the South
A deadly heat wave has spread from New Mexico to Florida, raising temperatures above 100 degrees in much of the country and killing at least 14 people so far.
As of Thursday, more than 55 million Americans were under heat alerts from the National Weather Service (See Heat Index Map) and were warned to stay indoors.
Forecasters blamed a “heat dome” for causing the soaring temperatures, which are likely to break records over the next two days. The heat is expected to abate after the weekend. | Mad Scramble for Sriracha as Shortage Hits
An ongoing Sriracha shortage has caused prices to soar for the popular hot sauce — if you can find any at all.
Huy Fong Foods, which makes the most popular Sriracha brand in the U.S., says the problem is a shortage of the chili peppers central to the sauce. Supplies have been tight for the past year, and now a buyer panic has set in.
In Los Angeles, a single 28 oz. bottle was selling for $30, and on Amazon, there’s a listing for two 17 oz bottles for $115. Some restaurants report that devotees are simply stealing bottles right off their tables.
