Article Icon 1Priest Chases Down Car Theft Suspect

The Rev. Canon Jean-Baptiste Commins was standing in his church parking lot when he heard tires squeal and a crash outside Saint Joseph Shrine in Detroit. An 18-year-old suspect had crashed a stolen car into another vehicle and was sprinting away from the scene with one shoe on. When someone yelled, “Stop him,” the French-born priest, wearing a full cassock, took off running.

Jean-Baptiste tackled the suspect and, with help from another church member, held him down until police arrived. The 18-year-old was arrested, and three others were detained. The woman in the other vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

After the suspect was in custody, Jean-Baptiste rushed back to check on the injured woman and see whether she needed a blessing or the Anointing of the Sick. He then returned to his evening prayers and dinner with his community.

Just another day in the D,” he said.

Dr. Joseph Wasselle Sr. spent decades as a vascular surgeon at Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital in Florida. This year, his son, Dr. Joseph Wasselle Jr., joined the same hospital’s staff. Months later, the two found themselves working side by side during a groundbreaking procedure.

The younger Wasselle, 34, was performing an endovascular aneurysm repair when his father stopped by to observe and ultimately scrubbed in to assist. The operation marked the first time an Orlando Health facility performed the minimally invasive procedure in a cardiac catheterization lab rather than a traditional operating room, a technique that can speed patient recovery.

Both attended the University of South Florida College of Medicine decades apart and were mentored by some of the same physicians.

None of those moments are quite as fulfilling as being able to show your dad what you have become,” Dr. Wasselle Jr. said.

His father put it simply: “I am so proud of Joe—my son, my colleague.”

Montana Miller couldn’t stand her fifth-grade teacher. She found his reading assignments too easy, challenged him constantly, and her parents eventually had her pulled from his class. “I absolutely could not stand him,” she said. “It was a battle of the minds, a battle of wills.”

Decades later, Montana, now 55, reconnected with Mitchell Grosky, 74, on Facebook. She discovered they shared similar values and interests, and the two became genuine friends. They reunited in person in 2019 while she was training for a world championship parachute event in Massachusetts, where Grosky, an accomplished photographer, snapped pictures of her skydiving.

When Miller learned through social media that Grosky was battling kidney disease and needed a transplant, she got tested and turned out to be a match. In April, she donated her kidney to the teacher she once dreaded.

When I was ten years old I hated his guts; now I’m giving him mine!?Miller wrote on Facebook. The successful transplant capped a remarkable reunion between a former student and the teacher she once couldn’t stand.
