Good morning! Today we commemorate the 80th anniversary of Congress authorizing the withholding of federal income tax as a temporary wartime measure. World War II is long over, but we’ve been withholding ever since.
Today we’re talking about Donald Trump’s second indictment this year, a new Gallup Poll showing that more Americans identify as conservative, and a carpenter building a working replica of a 1948 Citroen out of fruit trees.

Trump Indicted Over Classified Documents
Donald Trump has been indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with his possession of hundreds of classified government documents found at his Mar-a-Lago residence after he left the White House. He’s set to appear in federal court in Miami next Tuesday.
Trump was the first to announce the indictment, using his own Truth Social social media platform. This is his second indictment this year. He pleaded not guilty in April to charges in New York of falsifying business records.
“I never thought this could happen to a former President of the United States,” Trump posted Thursday. “I AM AN INNOCENT MAN!” | America is Becoming More Conservative
America is turning right: Social conservatism in the U.S. is at its highest level in a decade, with 38 percent of Americans saying they’re conservative or very conservative, according to a new Gallup poll.
That compares to 29 percent who describe themselves as liberal, down from 2022. A year ago, the two groups tied at 34 percent each.
Gallup’s annual Beliefs and Values survey also shows that economic conservatism has grown to its highest level since 2012, with 44 percent identifying as conservative on financial issues. (Full Survey Results Here) | China Building Spy Base in Cuba?
China is seeking to spy on the U.S. from Cuba, according to reports that have alarmed U.S. government officials, who warn of a return to a Cold War standoff, this time against China instead of Russia.
A spy base in Cuba, just 100 miles off the U.S. coast, would allow Beijing to collect intelligence on southeastern portions of America, home to many military facilities and major industries.
The Pentagon denied the reports, but said they were closely monitoring the growing relationship between Cuba and China. |
