U.S. Strikes in Syria, Israel Ramps Up Attacks
Two American fighter jets struck weapons and ammunition facilities in Syria last night. The targets were used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps—along with militia backed by Iran—and the operation took place in response to a string of attacks on American troops in Iraq and Syria.
A Pentagon spokesman said that similar operations will continue if attacks on U.S. forces do not cease.
In Israel, IDF forces carried out their biggest ground attack of the war, sending tanks and troops into Northern Gaza Wednesday night on a brief raid ahead of an expected ground invasion. See video here.
At the same time, Israel carried out 250 airstrikes, killing two Hamas leaders and releasing video of the strike. The air and ground strikes marked the biggest day of activity since the war began three weeks ago.
While Congress debates military aid to Israel, Florida Gov. Ron Desantis said Thursday he’s arranged to send drones, weapons, and ammunition on cargo planes chartered by Florida.
Ford Reaches Deal to End UAW Strike
The United Auto Workers reached a deal with Ford, a breakthrough toward ending the nearly six-week-old strike against the three big automakers. The UAW told striking Ford workers to return to their jobs.
The agreement with Ford calls for a 25% general salary increase plus cost of living raises that could raise salaries to above $40 an hour. Union members must still ratify the agreement, but assembly workers will get an 11% raise immediately.
GM and Chrysler parent Stellantis were in intensive talks Thursday, with the Ford deal as a template for their negotiations. Sources said the two sides could reach a tentative agreement by today.
Maine in Fear as Hunt for Gunman Continues
Maine residents along the coast remained in lockdown Thursday while police launched a wide-ranging search for Robert Card, the gunman suspected of killing 18 people at a bowling alley and a restaurant in Lewiston Wednesday night.
Schools, factories, and many retail shops were closed Thursday in Lewiston, Lisbon, Bowdoin, and other towns in what’s known as the Midcoast area of Maine. “Folks are simply terrified,” said one local politician.
The suspect, Robert Card, was a reservist in the U.S. Army and had been temporarily committed to a mental health facility over the summer for acting erratically. Hundreds of officers from various agencies are searching for him, including the Coast Guard and Canadian border officials.
