President Biden traveled to Camp David this weekend to discuss the future of his re-election campaign with his wife Jill, as well as children and grandchildren, following Thursday’s dismal debate performance.
Democratic Party leaders’ public support for Biden remains firm, but many in the media and some strategists are recommending that he withdraw from the race. One close adviser summarized the situation like this: “It’s a mess.”
Biden’s top advisers emphasized that any decision would be personal and made in consultation with his wife. They also said the trip to Camp David had been planned before the debate as a photo session, not a strategy meeting.
For now, top party officials say that while the debate was a bad night, Biden remains a strong candidate who won’t drop out. At the same time, the New York Times published an editorial Sunday saying Biden should step aside.
States Battle Over Tracking Gun Sales
Beginning today, a new law in California requires major credit card companies to track retail gun sales. New laws in Georgia, Iowa, Tennessee, and Wyoming do the exact opposite, and ban any credit card tracking of firearm sales.
The conflicting laws are a new battleground in gun policy debates, being pushed by gun control advocates as a way to flag unusual gun purchases and blocked by gun rights advocates who say the special tracking would sweep up innocent gun buyers.
Since 2023, 17 GOP-led states have passed measures prohibiting or limiting the tracking. Last week, Tennessee’s attorney general warned the three major credit card companies to comply with the state’s new law.
On the other hand, New York and Colorado have followed California’s lead and mandated those companies to carry out the tracking.
