Happy Saturday! On this date in April 1805, U.S. agent William Eaton led a small force of U.S. Marines and Berber mercenaries against the Tripolitan port city of Derna. They captured the town and gave birth to the phrase “to the shores of Tripoli,” from the official song of the U.S. Marine Corps.
As a young journalist, The Editor had an opportunity to visit the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego and observe boot camp. Today’s history item reminded him of that visit and the pride those young men and women had in serving their country. Oorah, you Devil Dogs.

Biden’s Job Approval Lowest Since 1956
President Biden’s 38.7% average job approval rating is the lowest by any president at this point in their first term since 1956, according to a new Gallup poll.
The rating averaged polls during Biden’s 13th quarter in office, which ran from January 20 to April 19. By comparison, Biden’s 38.7% is lower than Trump’s 46.8% and Obama’s 45.9%. Eisenhower’s 73.2% in 1956 topped the list.
Out of all 314 presidential quarters measured in Gallup’s records, Biden’s recent mark ranks 277th. Four other presidents had a rating below 50% in their 13th quarter; Obama was the only one to win reelection.
U.S. Birth Rate Hits Record Low
A new report from the CDC revealed that the general fertility rate in the U.S. fell by 3% from 2022, reaching a historic low. See the full report here.
Birth rates declined overall for women ages 20-39 years, but especially for women ages 20-24. That group reached a record low of 55.4%. Rates were unchanged for females aged 40-49.
The report also indicated that births declined for all ethnicities except Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander women. Black and Native American women experienced the largest birth declines, by 4% and 5%, respectively.
