Taiwan Earthquake Kills 9, Injures 950

Taiwan was hit by the strongest earthquake to shake the island in 25 years, killing nine people, injuring 900, and leaving a bus filled with 50 people still missing. Video, maps, and photos are here.

The earthquake measured 7.4 on the Richter scale and badly damaged several buildings when it struck just off the east coast at about 8 a.m. local time.

Over 50 aftershocks were recorded as rescue efforts were underway for over 100 people trapped in collapsed tunnels and on mountainous roads. One video of a man in a rooftop pool during the quake gives an idea of the building’s swaying.

Shoppers Skeptical of Electric Car Offerings

A new survey by auto specialist Edmunds reveals a significant disconnect between current electric cars on the market and the features shoppers actually want.

Edmunds reported most shoppers are looking for prices below $40,000, for cars and SUVs, not trucks, and for a vehicle with at least a 200-mile range.

The current EV market contains only four cars under $40,000 and four truck models, with three more planned. On the bright side for EV makers, the 200-mile range is a near-standard feature amongst all available vehicles.

The market share of EVs increased to 6.9% in 2023, up from 5.2% in 2022, but that rate is expected to slow with consumers critical of current EV prices, body type, and range.

Poll: Americans Agree on Core Values

Despite deep political polarization, Americans share many core beliefs, according to a new poll released by the Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

A majority of all Americans, about 9 in 10, believed that the right to vote, equal protection under the law, and privacy were very important. Results also indicated that 84% of U.S. adults viewed the freedom of religion as a key principle.

While the overall data showed “only small variances between Republicans and Democrats,” a large gap remained between the parties over one issue: Gun ownership. Sixty percent of Republicans said it was extremely important versus only 19% of Democrats.
