Good morning! On this day in 1861, General George B. McClellan and his Union troops defeated Confederate forces in northwestern Virginia, an area that later became West Virginia.
In today’s edition, we’re discussing the historic heat wave in the south, Hollywood actors on the picket line, and an ornery sea otter in California.

Extreme Heatwave Grips South
One hundred million Americans are living beneath a heat dome that’s shooting thermometers into the triple digits and breaking records.
El Paso and Miami have hit 100 degrees for a month straight, and Phoenix hasn’t dropped below 110 for twelve days. In Death Valley, CA, temps may hit 130 this week—nearing the highest recorded temperature in world history.
The massive high-pressure weather system is repelling the jet stream and preventing moisture from the Pacific Ocean from cooling down temperatures. Conditions are expected to worsen in the next week, and the high temps will likely spread further north. | Biden Touts Alternative Loan Forgiveness
The Supreme Court struck down the Biden administration’s student loan forgiveness program, but a new “student loan safety net” may allow borrowers to escape their education debts after all.
Students will be able to apply for the SAVE Plan this summer, and those accepted won’t have to make payments toward their balance if they earn less than $32,800.
Starting next July, borrowers with an initial balance lower than $12,000 will get the remainder of their debt canceled after making ten years of payments.
The SAVE plan was announced last year. It’s been overshadowed by the failed attempt at mass debt cancellation, but it’s now the Biden administration’s primary vehicle for keeping its loan forgiveness promises. It’s also likely to be challenged in court. | Hollywood Millionaires Close to Striking
American actors are ready to walk off the set.
A-Listers like Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep, members of the Hollywood union SAG-AFTRA, are upset about compensation from streaming deals, along with the threat of Artificial Intelligence using their likenesses without permission.
The Writers Guild of America went on strike in May, and now the actors are threatening to join them and create the first double strike since the ’60s.
Contracts between the actors union and major movie studios expired at midnight last night.
