Good morning! On this day in 1962, the Rolling Stones gave their first public performance at Marquee Club in London. After securing the gig, Mick Jagger said, “I hope they don’t think we’re a Rock ‘n Roll outfit.”
In today’s edition, we’re covering the devastating rainstorm that’s causing chaos in Vermont, the sharp decline in American trust in institutions, and Aretha Franklin’s hand-written will discovered under couch cushions.

Vermont Deals With Intense Flooding
A 1000-year rainstorm has caused catastrophic flooding in Vermont.
Flash floods have trapped hundreds of residents, and swelling rivers have wiped out roads, destroyed track trains, and pushed a major dam to the brink. Water levels at the Wrightsville Dam, about 6 miles upstream from the state capitol, have reached one foot from maximum capacity. (See drone footage).
Parts of Montpelier have already been submerged in several feet of water, prompting residents to shelter in upper levels or rooftops. In the downtown area, people have been forced to transit in kayaks, and the first floors of many businesses are underwater.
President Biden has declared a national emergency in the state and authorized FEMA to begin relief efforts. No deaths have been reported. | Ukraine Kills Russian General
A British Storm Shadow missile killed the highest-ranking Russian general yet to die in the war in Ukraine.
Petro Andriushchenko died in an attack on the occupied city of Berdyansk. He was the ninth Russian general to die in the conflict, and he was known personally by Vladimir Putin.
Russian military channels confirmed the kill after Ukrainian officials said the general had been “liquidated” by Kyiv’s armed forces.
Berdyansk is a strategically-located city on the Sea of Azov, and it’s been under constant attack from the Ukrainian-launched Storm Shadows—the longest range missiles available to the Ukrainians. | Americans are Down on Institutions
A Gallop poll shows that the percentage of Americans confident in the higher education system has dropped to a dismal 36%.
That number was 48% in 2018 and 57% in 2015. The findings match the larger trend found by Gallop’s polling; Americans are far less trusting of institutions as a whole–including the police force, the church, and the presidency.
Of all the institutions tracked, Congress has the poorest confidence scores. In a poll taken last month, only eight percent of respondents said they had confidence in Congress’s ability to function.
