Jordan, Scalise Vie to be Next Speaker
The race to be the next House speaker has two announced candidates to replace ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and Majority Leader Steve Scalise both said they want the job.
Other names being floated include Tom Emmer and Kevin Hern, and several Republicans even weighed in on drafting Donald Trump for the job. Trump has said he’s focused solely on his race for president.
The House recessed after voting McCarthy out of office but will return next week to hear from candidates on Tuesday and move to a vote on Wednesday. It took 15 ballots before McCarthy won the speakership vote last time.
That’s still a far cry from the top of the list, headed by the world’s richest man, Bernard Arnault, owner of the LVMH fashion empire, with a net worth of $211 billion. Elon Musk is second, at $180 billion, followed by Jeff Bezos at $114 billion.
Forbes reports that total net worth among billionaires is down overall, a victim of falling stocks and rising interest rates. Musk dropped to No. 2 from No. 1 due to his acquisition of Twitter. You can see the full list here, sortable by categories.
Gallup: Most Want Brands to Avoid Politics
A new Gallup Poll shows that nearly 60% of Americans don’t think businesses should take a public stand on current political and social issues. That opposition is up from 52% last year, indicating growing resistance to the trend.
Only 37% of Americans think businesses should take a public stand on LGBTQ+ issues, 45% on racial matters, 39% on gun laws, 26% on abortion, 19% on political candidates, and 15% on religion.
Gallup reports in its demographic breakdowns that younger Americans are the most in favor of business taking social stands, and Democrats favor it more than Republicans. (See Survey Results)
