House Deposes Its Speaker in Historic First
The House of Representatives has deposed its speaker, an unprecedented event in American history. Rep. Patrick McHenry will serve as interim House Speaker until a replacement is voted in, and the House isn’t expected to take a vote until next week.
Despite the support of a majority of Republicans, Keven McCarthy was voted out as speaker through an unlikely alliance of Democrats with eight Republicans, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz, who blamed McCarthy for making deals with Democrats.
The question now is, who will succeed McCarthy? He said Tuesday he didn’t plan to run for the role again. The angry divisions between McCarthy’s supporters and the eight detractors means Democrats will have significant leverage in any vote.
Moreover, under the Constitution, the speaker not only doesn’t have to be in the majority party, they don’t even have to be an elected official. Here’s a list of potential candidates.
Striking workers would include hundreds of positions, including nurses, technicians, radiologists, sonographers, and others. The main issues revolved around staff shortages and worker burnout, which union leaders say causes patient neglect.
Kaiser says it has contingency plans if the planned three-day strike does happen today and that its hospitals and emergency departments will stay open.
America’s Most Unhappy Workers: Nurses, Teachers
Employee happiness has steadily declined since 2020, and that decline accelerated in 2023, according to a new benchmark study that ranks eight major industries by how happy its employees are.
According to the ranking, based on how likely employees are to recommend the industry to others, the happiest employees are in the construction industry, buoyed by billions of dollars of new federal infrastructure spending.
The unhappiest: Workers in health care, who feel overworked and understaffed since the pandemic. They beat out teachers for being the most unhappy with their field. (See Full Rankings)
