Good morning! On this day in 1804, the famous duel occurred between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. It was a violent resolution to building tension between the two American leaders, and it left Hamilton dead.
In today’s edition, we’re talking about the Marine Corps’ lack of a confirmed leader, President Biden’s hot temper with staffers, and a special kind of paint that’s helping the world’s poor stay cool.

Marine Core Without a Leader
For the first time since the 1850s, the Marine Corps is without a commandant.
Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) is blocking the fast-track promotions of nearly 250 military leaders—including Gen. Eric Smith, President Biden’s nominee for the Marine Corps head, and the senator is sticking to his guns.
Tuberville is unhappy with the Pentagon’s new policy of facilitating travel for abortions for service members, and he’s unwilling to back off his stance until the Pentagon “follows the law or changes the law.”
The senator emphasized his holdout rationale in a statement: “…the burden is not on me to pass legislation to stop this illegal policy, the burden is on the administration.” | Turkey to Allow Sweden’s NATO Bid
Sweden applied for NATO membership a year ago, but Turkey has routinely blocked the accession.
Now, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan says he will allow the new membership (Hungary has also blocked it, but it’s widely believed that they will follow Turkey’s lead).
The stated reasoning for Turkey’s opposition has been Sweden’s toleration of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, an Islamic minority group that Turkey considers terrorists.
Sweden toughened its stance on the KWP ahead of Turkey’s newfound acceptance, and though this seems to explain the change in policy, some analysts think that Erdoğan has used Sweden as a bargaining chip for his bid to purchase F-16s from the United States.
President Biden is scheduled to meet with the Turkish leader during the upcoming NATO summit. | Football Coach Fired Amid Hazing Scandal
Pat Fitzgerald has been the head football coach at Northwestern since 2002, but he was fired Monday over allegations of abusive hazing and racism within the program.
The university started an investigation into the football team’s culture in November, and it found a long history of hazing toward freshmen—including sexually inappropriate rituals. Initially, Fitzgerald was given a two-week suspension without pay for failing to be aware of the practices and acting.
Several former players then went public with allegations of racism, and the university’s president decided to upgrade the punishment from a suspension to a firing.
