Trump Unable to Secure Bond
Lawyers for former President Trump told a New York appellate court Monday that he cannot secure a $454 million bond to appeal his civil fraud judgment.
Trump’s lawyers have also asked the court to reverse the requirement for the bond and halt the ruling’s enforcement. To obtain a bond, Trump would have to post collateral covering 120% of the judgment, or about $557.5 million.
Trump officials said they approached more than 30 bond companies and found none to handle that amount. In addition, bond companies only accept cash or cash equivalents, and Trump’s wealth is tied up in real estate.
If the court doesn’t reverse the requirement, the state can begin seizing Trump’s assets on March 25.
Supreme Court Blocks Texas Law
The Supreme Court on Monday barred Texas from implementing a law that would have allowed the state to arrest illegal immigrants without the federal government being involved.
The court ruled that a temporary hold on the law should continue while the case is reviewed by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in April. At issue is whether the law unconstitutionally conflicts with federal immigration authority.
A federal judge temporarily blocked the law on March 4, and the 5th Circuit paused that ruling, leading the Biden administration to file its emergency request to the Supreme Court requesting Monday’s continuation of the block.
