Good morning! The first movie ever made was filmed on this day in 1878, featuring a galloping horse (see film here). It was made to discover if horses ever have all four hoofs in the air at one time. The film proved that they do.
Today, we’re talking about America’s new No. 1 beer (it’s Mexican), Netflix getting into the food service business, and Beyonce’s outsized impact on the Norwegian economy.

Penny Indicted For Subway Chokehold
A grand jury has indicted Marine vet Daniel Penny in connection with Jordon Neely’s death by chokehold on a NY subway, law enforcement sources say.
The specific charges won’t be made public until Penny appears in court, but he was arrested on second-degree manslaughter charges. He says he acted to defend himself and others in the subway car. (See video)
Witnesses say that Neely, a homeless man known to be mentally unstable, was threatening and harassing passengers. By using the chokehold, Penny put himself at the center of a heated public debate over vigilante justice. | Modelo Passes Bud Light as No. 1 Beer
Bud Light has been dethroned as America’s best-selling beer by Modelo Especial, following months of continuing sales declines driven by a conservative boycott.
Bud Light has been the nation’s sales leader since 2001, a brand made famous by its funny and creative TV ads. But a sales promotion featuring trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney sparked a ferocious backlash.
Retail sales for Bud Light were down 24% the week ending June 3, while Modelo Especial sales were up 12%. Both companies have said they’re pumping extra money into marketing this summer. | Fired Starbucks Manager Wins $25M Lawsuit
A federal jury awarded $25 million to Shannon Phillips, a white Starbucks regional manager fired after an incident in Philadelphia where two Black men were refused access to the bathroom.
Phillips wasn’t involved in the incident, and the jury agreed with her claim that Starbucks fired her because she was white, a violation of her civil rights.
In addition to the $25 million Starbucks owes in punitive damages, the jury also awarded her $600,000 in compensatory damages.
