Tropical Storm Helene is rapidly intensifying in the Caribbean Sea and could become a major hurricane before making landfall on the Florida coast late Thursday.
The storm threatens to bring catastrophic storm surge up to 15 feet, heavy rainfall, and winds potentially exceeding 111 mph, with impact expected to extend far inland across the southeastern U.S. Here’s a live tracker.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 61 counties, while hurricane watches span parts of Florida, Cuba, and Mexico.
Officials are urging residents in evacuation zones to leave, emphasizing that such extreme storm surge “is NOT survivable.”

Russian Jets Spotted Near Alaska
Four Russian military aircraft entered Alaska’s Air Defense Identification Zone on Monday, remaining in international airspace without breaching U.S. or Canadian territory, NORAD reported.
The identification zone is international airspace where aircraft must identify themselves.
This latest incursion comes after the U.S. deployed about 130 soldiers to Alaska in response to a spike in Russian military activity in the area.
NORAD also confirmed that Monday’s detection was the fifth such incident in September but maintained the U.S. military remains ready to defend its territory.
