Floods Rise Across Midwest
Heavy rains have caused severe flooding in multiple states this weekend.
In Iowa, Governor Kim Reynolds issued a disaster declaration for 21 counties, and authorities are asking people to avoid the state’s northern region—especially along the Rock River, which broke its record height by 5 week. (Video here)
In South Dakota, officials are warning that floods will likely reach peak levels tomorrow or Tuesday. Sioux Falls is routing wastewater to holding tanks never before needed, and Mayor Paul TenHaken says that this is “the most strained the system has ever been.”
Over 120 million Americans are under heat warnings this weekend as temperatures soar from the Eastern Seaboard to the West Coast.
New York City is predicted to tie its daily record high of 96°, and Philadelphia may break its own record of 98°.
In Palm Springs, an excessive heat warning is likely as temperatures are predicted to hit 114° , and cities in Arizona, Nevada, and California are all dealing with sizzling temps.
Experts say that it’s difficult to define the exact parameters of the “heat domes” in the atmosphere that are causing the air below them to compress and heat up, but noted that they do not typically form with this strength this early in the year.
