Good Morning! On this date in 1900, railroad engineer Casey Jones died in a train collision, one hand on the brake and one hand on his screaming whistle. “The Ballad of Casey Jones” made him a folk hero. (Hear Johnny Cash’s Version)
Today’s history item got us thinking about trains. With a little research, we learned that the term “horsepower” was coined as a marketing tool to sell early steam engines. Oddly, America’s first steam locomotive lost a race to a horse.

Students Defy University Deadline
Columbia University officials began suspending students Monday after pro-Palestinian protestors failed to disperse by a 2 p.m. deadline imposed by the school’s administration.
The university offered the students a chance to finish the semester in good standing if they left the encampment and signed a form committing to abide by university policies. More than 300 protestors defied the deadline and at least 120 tents remained.
Law enforcement officers were stationed outside the encampment, but neither they nor school officials entered the encampment. Protest leaders said they would not be moved unless force was used.
U.S. Marshals Killed in North Carolina
Eight police officers were shot, three fatally, while serving a warrant at a Charlotte, North Carolina home Monday, according to officials.
A U.S. Marshals task force of officers from multiple agencies attempted to serve a warrant in east Charlotte when the shooting started. Three marshals were killed and four local police officers were injured, one critically.
The gunfire began sometime around 1 p.m. and continued for several minutes. Numerous police and emergency service vehicles responded to the scene, shutting down the neighborhood and surrounding streets.
List: The largest houses in America
A new list of 15 of the largest houses in America ranges from a 72,215-sq-ft. mansion in the Ozark Mountains owned by a millionaire astrophysicist to the vast 175,000-sq.-ft Biltmore House in Ashville, still privately owned by the Vanderbilt family.
Many of the homes on the list are now open to the public as tourist attractions, including the Biltmore House. Picture of the estates are here.
Some, like “The One” in Bel Air, California, are privately owned. That house was bought by Fashion Nova owner Richard Saghian for $126 million. It includes 21 bedrooms, 42 bathrooms, a 30-car garage, and five swimming pools.
