Student Protests Erupt Across Ivy League
Pro-Palestinian student protests spilled across the Ivy League Monday as police arrested dozens at Yale, the gates to Harvard Yard were closed to the public, and Columbia shut down in-person classes for security reasons.
The protests drew bipartisan fire from Congress and the White House, where they were condemned as antisemitic. Jewish Reps. Josh Gottheimer, Dan Goldman, and Jared Moskowitz planned to walk with Jewish students and speak at Columbia, the center of the firestorm.
Police arrested 100 students at Columbia last week but said Monday that the school wouldn’t allow them on its campus, which is private property. At Yale, police arrested 45 protestors Monday for blocking entry to Beinecke Plaza in “solidarity with Gaza.”
Opening Arguments Heard in Trump Trial
Opening arguments in former President Donald Trump’s so-called “hush money” trial began Monday, with attorneys for both sides making their opening arguments.
Prosecutors claimed Trump used lawyer Michael Cohen to cover up payments intended to hide an alleged involvement with adult film actress Stormy Daniels. They said they would tie that to a “conspiracy” to influence the 2016 election.
In rebuttal, Trump’s defense lawyer minimized all the charges, calling Cohen a known liar and shrugging off the conspiracy idea. “There’s nothing wrong with trying to influence an election,” said his lawyer. “It’s called democracy.”
The court adjourned for the Passover holiday around noon and will return for another shortened session today.
Baseball’s Food Game Weighs Heavily on Fans
For the millions of fans expected to visit baseball stadiums this summer, the real contest could be choosing between a two-pound chicken tender called the “Fowl Pole” or a simple bag of popcorn.
For a dieter, the options available at a modern ballpark can be terrifying: Cleveland offers the slider dog: a hot dog with mac-and-cheese, bacon, and Froot Loops; Kansas City features a BBQ Reese’s Sandwich, which mixes pulled pork and peanut butter cups; and in Atlanta, the Braves have the Blooper Burger — beef, cheese, hot dog, chicken tenders, jalapenos, and cheese sauce.
Nutrition experts offer the following strategies for those looking to eat healthy: try walking a few laps around the ballpark before making a selection or simply sticking with baseball’s lower-calorie standards: peanuts and a plain low-carb hot dog.
